John M. Smith was born on February 9, 1924 in Philadelphia, Pa., and enlisted in the Army on April 13, 1943 in Philadelphia. At the time of enlistment he was unmarried, had completed four years of high school and working in a machine shop. Smith joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colo. and was assigned to Company C of the 85th Infantry Regiment. He later served at Camp Swift, Tex. before being sent to Italy.
